Runes
What are Runes?
Runes are a set of 24 symbols & 1 blank. These can be carved into stone, wood, crystals or can even be as simple as written on a piece of paper.
History-
Runes are an ancient alphabet; they were originally used as a sacred writing system used by the Germanic people. They used them for writing as well as divination and casting magic. The oldest known inscription using Runes dates back to the 3rd century AD. These Runes were found by archeologists in Scandinavia. The word Rune comes from the word 'runa' meaning 'a whisper' or 'secret'
Now, let's dive into some Norse Mythology. It is believed that the god of war and death created runes, his name. Odin. I'm going to summarize Odin's story on the creation of Runes. Odin was always in search of gaining more knowledge, which lead him on a quest. He wandered the Earth searching to add to his wealth of knowledge and power. Off he set on Sleipnir ( his 8 legged horse), on his travels he came across 3 women (Urd, Verdandi & Skuld) they spoke with Odin on many things, but he wanted to know more about what his future held. They sent him on a journey to Jotunheim to meet with Mimir. At this meeting Odin pledged his left eye so he could drink for the spring that was believed to show him what he needed to see. Odin was not satisfied with what he gained so continued his quest to The World Tree. There is where he would impale himself on his spear, spending 9 days and nights stuck. On day 9 he had a vision of himself writing on the rocks below him; with great struggle he managed to reach his sword and carved symbols into the tree itself. After freeing himself he decided to journey to Valhalla so share his experience and pass on the symbols and knowledge he had gain while hanging from The World Tree.
How to use Runes?
Runes can be used as an alphabet; but we are going to dive into the witchy side. Runes can be used as divination tools; similar to Tarot cards you pull ones you feel draw to. A simple spread is a 3 Rune pull representing past, present and future. They can also be used during spell work but using ones that align with what you are calling in.
*Witchy Tip*
Getting to know Runes and all their meanings can feel overwhelming. But let's start simple. Everyday pull one Rune for guidance on your day; don't look at it! Before you go to bed see which one you pulled and then look up the meaning, see if it resonates with your day. Even keep a journal on what you pull and what it meant for your day.
Creating your own Runes
You can create your own set, which can be a fun spiritual task.
You can simply write the symbols of your chosen stone, rock or crystal. As you write each symbol take time and put intent into it, think about the meaning of the symbol. Another way to create them is by using wood and burning or painting the symbols on. This can be done but using a thick branch and cutting it into rounds.
Below I have created a card for each Runic symbol
