Firstly, if you are sitting reading this THANK YOU, my first blog about something I am truly passionate about
Using spell candles during spellwork or rituals has been around for many, many years. Spell candles can be used for simple 'quick' spell work as well. You may feel drawn to just light a candle and sit with it; by doing this you are sending your intention into the universe. Candle magic can be simple, just like everything in the craft you need to do what feels right for you.
Are there guidelines and books to follow absolutely but your spell work is exactly that yours. Also another thing, even if it is a simple spell or you are choosing to light a candle and set an intention be sure to always open and close your space. By that I mean cleanse the area you are choosing to work in and at the end give thanks to the universe, your guides and Mother Earth for allowing you to do your magic.
Now let's talk spell candles.....
Spell candles are used to represent a colour, element or purely to call in light. They are the perfect addition to your altar as well, because they aren't too big and don't have a long burn time.
Choosing your candle....
In a lot of spell work you will be called to use a certain colour, this can be important because the colour of the candle is being used to represent something in particular. But as I said above your journey is your own. A spell might say to use a black spell candle but you may feel more drawn to use grey. This is ok, I would always use black for a protection spell but in other spell work I might feel black is to harsh so I will swap it out for grey, dark blue or even sometimes white. But we will get into white spell candles a little later.
So, back to choosing your candle. Each colour represents something, so having a colour guide on hand is always useful. I personally suggest having a basic one, but also having one you can add notes to. It is important to note down why you went with a certain colour. I like to sit with my candles before choosing them, let them call to you.
Below you will find a quick colour guide I have put together.
Colour guide....
Black- Protection & Removing negative energy
White- This colour is your all-rounder, white (like clear quartz) can be used in place of any other colour, Purification & New beginnings
Red- Passion, Strength & Courage
Pink- Love, Self-love & Nurturing
Purple- New Moon, Intuition, Spiritual wisdom & Psychic ability
Blue- Full Moon, Communication, Calming & Spiritual inspiration
Green- Abundance, Connection to Mother Earth & Expansion
Yellow- Luck, Enlightenment & Joy
Orange-Success, Ambition & Creativity
Silver- Moon Energy, Visions, Dreams & Intuition
Gold- Sun Energy, Happiness, Wealth & Longevity
White spell candles are the only colour that can be used in all spell work to replace another colour. It's like they are a blank canvas waiting for the artist to pick up the paint brush and make it their own.
When choosing your candle for a new spell it is important to use a virgin (unused) candle, to cleanse it before use and to also choose the colour right for the spell and the one you are drawn to.

Spell candles are a great tool that every witch should have on hand, they are small and are perfect for single use and they are also very easy to anoint.
Lets dive into that next, anointing your spell candle. Anointing a spell candle is very simple and such a beautiful ritual on its own. This is performed by coating your candle in oil and then rolling it in herbs; you may even choose to carve something into your candle as well. If you do choose to carve something into your candle keep it simple; it may be a symbol or word.
Something I did forget to mention earlier, it is important to let your candle burn out, it is believed that if you blow a candle out during or after spell work, you will blow away your intent and your spell.
Anointing Your Candle....
- Choose your candle, oil and herb (Ideally these 3 would be based on what you're calling in)
-Cleanse and bless them
- Set your intention and what you would like to call in
- Also have a small plate or tray to work on (big enough for you to roll your candle on)
-Start by rubbing the oil into the candle; start at the middle and work your way around in a clockwise motion
As you are doing this think about what your intention is and what you are asking to receive out of this ritual
- Once the candle is covered in oil place your chosen herb onto the tray and roll your candle in it (small tip, don't overload the candle with herbs a nice thin coat will do)
-Once your candle is ready find a nice quiet space and begin your ritual
This is a super simple ritual, light your candle and say your spell and think about your intentions behind it. Sit with this while your candle burns down. I personally would use this time to meditate and reflect on what you are calling in.
Once your candle is burnt, close your ritual by giving thanks to the universe, Mother Earth and of course your guides.
Keep your wording simple
I call in (intention) to my life
I ask my guides to help me with this
I ask this be done in a positive way
Blessed Be
Meditation & Intention
- You can simply choose a candle
- Put your intention into it
- Light it and meditate with some calming music on
- I do suggest making sure you have a nice clear mind so your intention is clear
* Before doing this I always like to cleanse the area and open and close the mediation as well*
Spell candles are a great addition to spell work as they can be used in so many different ways. My spell candles are never too far when I am doing my spell work. And I always follow what I am been called to use. I often light a spell candle for a certain thing and then just go about what I am doing; the light from a spell candle helps guide me and makes me feel into what I am doing.
When I do this, I never blow them out, to me it feels like a completion of the task at hand when that little light goes out.
A candle may guide and light your way, but remember your light will always be within you as well. A candle may be your source of light but to someone you are their source of light. Keep shining bright and don't let your flame go out.
